How Long Is a Novel? Word Counts by Category and Genre
Novelleo Editorial · Updated · 6 min read
Short answer
A novel is generally 40,000 words or more, the line the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association uses for its Nebula Awards. Most debut adult novels land between about 70,000 and 100,000 words (roughly 250–400 pages), while fantasy often runs longer and middle-grade books shorter.
What word count makes a book a novel?
The most widely cited line is 40,000 words. The Nebula Awards, run by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA), define a novel as a work of 40,000 words or more, and the Hugo Awards use a similar threshold. Below that, you're in novella territory.
That's the definition. The market is different. A 45,000-word book is technically a novel, but most publishers expect adult novels, especially debuts, to be considerably longer. So there are really two questions: what counts as a novel, and how long a novel should be to sell.
The lines between categories are conventions, not laws of nature. Magazines and contests set their own limits, and some treat anything up to 1,500 words as flash or 'sudden' fiction. If you're submitting somewhere specific, their guidelines win over any general table, including the one below.
How long is each kind of story, from flash fiction to epic?
Story length categories come from awards and magazines, not a single authority, but these are the most commonly used boundaries. Page counts assume about 250–300 words per printed page.
| Category | Word count | Approx. printed pages | Source of the line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flash fiction | Up to about 1,000 | 1–4 | Common magazine usage |
| Short story | Under 7,500 | Up to about 30 | SFWA Nebula rules |
| Novelette | 7,500–17,499 | 25–70 | SFWA Nebula rules |
| Novella | 17,500–39,999 | 60–160 | SFWA Nebula rules |
| Novel | 40,000+ | 130+ | SFWA Nebula rules |
| Epic / doorstopper | Often 120,000+ | 400+ | Informal; mostly fantasy and SF |
How long is a debut novel in each genre?
Agents' expectations vary by genre, because readers' expectations do. Fantasy readers expect room for world-building; thriller readers expect pace. These ranges come from The Manuscript Academy's 2026 guide to what agents want. Treat them as the comfortable zone, not hard limits.
- Fantasy and science fiction run longest because the reader has to learn a world: its rules, history and places. That takes pages.
- Romance and mystery run tighter because readers come for a specific experience, the relationship or the puzzle, and extra length can feel like padding.
- Literary fiction has the widest real-world spread. Plenty of acclaimed literary novels are short, but debut expectations still sit in the 80,000s.
- Young adult and middle grade are shorter because readers are younger and the stories are usually more tightly focused on one protagonist.
| Genre | Typical range (words) |
|---|---|
| Literary fiction | 80,000–95,000 |
| Commercial / general fiction | 80,000–100,000 |
| Contemporary romance | 70,000–90,000 |
| Historical romance | 80,000–100,000 |
| Mystery / thriller | 80,000–90,000 |
| Science fiction | 90,000–110,000 |
| Fantasy | 90,000–120,000 |
| Young adult | 60,000–80,000 |
| Middle grade | 40,000–60,000 |
Why do agents care so much about word count?
Three reasons. Cost: a longer book costs more to edit, print and ship, and publishers take more risk on a debut. Reader expectations: a 150,000-word cozy mystery or a 60,000-word epic fantasy feels wrong to the people who buy those books. And signal: a manuscript far outside the range can suggest the writer hasn't yet learned to cut or develop.
Writer's Digest's widely shared guide puts the sweet spot for adult commercial and literary fiction at 80,000 to 89,999 words, with roughly 70,000 to 109,000 as the safe range. It calls anything under 70,000 too short and 110,000 or more too long, with extra room for science fiction and fantasy.
In practice, the word count is one of the first things an agent sees: most query letters state it in the opening lines, usually rounded to the nearest thousand. A number far outside the genre's range can end the read before the first page does, however good the writing. That's unfair, but it's also easy to avoid.
None of this applies if you're not querying. Self-published novels, serials and books written for friends and family can be exactly as long as the story needs.
How many pages is a novel?
Printed books typically hold 250 to 300 words per page, depending on the font, trim size and how much dialogue there is. Kindlepreneur's survey of over 900 authors found an average of about 280 words per page for fiction.
Dialogue-heavy books use fewer words per page, because short lines leave white space; dense literary prose uses more. Larger trim sizes and smaller fonts raise the count, which is why the same novel can run 280 pages in one edition and 350 in another. For planning, words are the reliable unit and pages are an estimate.
| Word count | Approx. pages |
|---|---|
| 40,000 | 133–160 |
| 60,000 | 200–240 |
| 80,000 | 267–320 |
| 100,000 | 333–400 |
| 120,000 | 400–480 |
Can a novel be short and still work?
Absolutely. Plenty of classics are short. F. Scott Fitzgerald worried that The Great Gatsby was barely 50,000 words. Short novels are especially common in literary fiction, in translation and in self-publishing, where no printer's budget sets a floor.
If you're self-publishing, writing a serial, or writing a novel for your family or yourself, the right length is simply the length the story needs. The genre ranges matter most when you're querying agents for a traditional deal.
A short first novel is also a smart choice for a first-time writer. A 50,000-word draft takes a third of the writing time of a 150,000-word one, and finishing teaches you more than any amount of planning. You can always write the long one second.
How long does it take to write a novel?
It's mostly arithmetic. Divide your target length by what you can write on an ordinary day, and you have the number of writing days for a first draft. Revision usually takes at least as long again.
Be honest about your ordinary day, not your best day. A pace you can hold for months beats a burst you can hold for a week. If you can only write on weekends, count those days alone: 1,500 words every Saturday and Sunday is 3,000 a week, which gets you an 80,000-word draft in under seven months.
| Daily words | 50,000-word novel | 80,000-word novel | 100,000-word novel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 | About 167 days | About 267 days | About 333 days |
| 500 | 100 days | 160 days | 200 days |
| 1,000 | 50 days | 80 days | 100 days |
| 2,000 | 25 days | 40 days | 50 days |
How do you plan a novel to hit your target length?
Work backwards from the target. Most adult novel chapters run 2,000 to 4,000 words, so an 80,000-word novel is roughly 20 to 40 chapters. Decide your target, divide by a chapter length you like, and you know how many chapters to outline.
If your draft comes in short, the usual cause is a thin middle. Add a subplot or let a key scene play out in full instead of summarizing it. If it comes in long, cut from the beginning first: most first drafts start a chapter or two too early.
Don't chase the number while drafting, though. First drafts often come in over or under the target, and revision moves them toward it. Aim at the range, write the whole story, then trim or deepen. A novel that's 3,000 words over but complete is in a far better position than one that's perfectly on target and unfinished.
- Pick your genre's range and choose a target inside it (say, 85,000).
- Choose an average chapter length (say, 3,000 words).
- Divide: about 28 chapters.
- Outline one line per chapter, then draft.
- Check your total at the midpoint and adjust the remaining chapters.
