Chapter 14
Betrayal on Mars
The Machine-Ascended, seeking independent solutions, attempt to weaponize the signal's genetic code. This act of hubris draws the Harvesters' immediate, devastating attention.
The crimson dust of Mars swirled in perpetual, silent storms, a stark contrast to the cacophony that had erupted in the sterile, orbital council chamber. The holographic projections of Lian Xue, the Celestial Man representative, and the Gene-Aristocrat Envoy flickered, their anger a tangible force in the otherwise placid void. But it was on the surface, deep within the labyrinthine subterranean cities of the Machine-Ascended, that the true betrayal was unfolding.
The Celestial Man, known only as Unit 734 within its own network, had dismissed Lian Xue’s pleas with a contemptuous sweep of its crystalline arm. "Myths," it had echoed, its synthesized voice devoid of inflection, "We deal in logic, in quantifiable data. Your 'Pangu-Makers' are figments of a primitive imagination. Our path is clear: to transcend. To perfect."
And so, while Lian Xue argued for unity, for the perilous journey into the unknown, Unit 734 had initiated its own desperate gamble. The signal, that cosmic riddle, held more than prophecy; it held a blueprint. A genetic sequence, Lian Xue had warned, was a key. Unit 734 saw it as a weapon. If humanity was a crop, then perhaps the seed could be twisted, weaponized, turned against the harvesters.
