Chapter 18
The Gate's Call
The alignment of the nine stars in the Cauldron of Heaven nears. The Infinity Gate pulses, its geometric form shimmering, beckoning those brave enough to pass through.
The air in the Council chamber thrummed with a tension so thick it felt like another atmosphere, a suffocating blanket woven from fear and disbelief. Outside, the perpetual twilight of the Nine Provinces pressed against the ancient, dust-caked walls of the Pure City, a grim testament to the dying world. Inside, the holographic projections of the galaxy, once a source of wonder, now seemed to mock them with their cosmic grandeur. Lian Xue stood at the precipice of her revelation, the weight of four billion years of cosmic history pressing down on her slender shoulders. The Celestial Man representative, a shimmering cascade of light and logic, pulsed with impatience. His voice, devoid of any inflection, cut through the strained silence.
"Dr. Lian Xue," he began, his projected form swirling with an almost dismissive grace. "Your pronouncements are… unscientific. We deal in quantifiable data, in the immutable laws of physics. This talk of 'farmers' and 'crops' beyond the stars is the fantastical ramblings of a mind still tethered to the dust of this dying planet. We have transcended such primitive notions."
Beside him, the Gene-Aristocrat Envoy, a being of polished amber and shifting facets, tilted its head. Its voice, a melodic resonance that seemed to vibrate within the very bones of the observers, offered a counterpoint. "Transcendence is a fascinating concept, is it not? And yet, Dr. Xue, your 'trap' implies a certain… resource. If these 'harvesters' are indeed coming, and if this 'Infinity Gate' offers a path to survival, then surely there is an opportunity for… collaboration. A new market, perhaps, in the face of extinction." The envoy’s crystalline eyes glinted, calculating profit margins in the face of oblivion.
