The air outside the great walls of the Pure City was a caress of poison, a familiar sting that the sentinels, cloaked and grim, inhaled with practiced ease. Their boots crunched on the calcified dust that had once been fertile soil, a landscape bleached of all life save the hardy, mutated scrub that clung to the ruins like desperate fingers. Patrol Unit Seven, led by Commander Jian, moved with the silent efficiency of men who had long ago accepted their mortal coils as a temporary, flawed vessel. Their faces, etched with the grime of the dying world, were impassive, their eyes scanning the horizon with the practiced vigilance born of generations who knew that to falter was to invite the void.

They were the last pure humans, or so they believed. Their adherence to the old ways, the sanctity of the flesh, was not merely a belief; it was their identity. To tamper with the body, to seek immortality through silicon or crystal, was to sever oneself from the very essence of being, to become something less than human. It was a dogma as ingrained as the poisoned air they breathed.

“Anything, Jian?” asked Sergeant Li, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the desolate quiet.
